Suicide Pool Leaderboard Correction

A player pointed out an issue w/ the suicide pool leaderboard that really didn't come into play until this year.  The "games correct" column is not really a great indicator of how everyone is doing, as it artificially deflates the ranking of those that rebought.  (Think what you want about rebuys and the difficulty of lasting this long w/o rebuying, but we've consciously never put in a rule where rebuy entrys lose out to those who did not need a rebuy.  We do not want to discourage rebuys.  We encourage rebuys b/c a bigger pool w/ more people is always more fun.)  Therefore, we put in a new "Games Picked" column to correct for it.  The leaderboard will now be sorted on Games Picked, then Tiebreaker Score.  We actually had to review the rules we typed & posted to make sure this change was correct.  Since the rules clearly state the "last person alive" wins, and not the "person who picked the most games," this was actually a change that should have occurred years ago.  Either way, we got it sorted out now, so no harm no foul.  Let me know if this just angers you to no end and we'll consider what to do for the game next year.

Day 6 Is Posted

We are starting to get down to the nitty-gritty (is that still a phrase?) in the Suicide Pool. Yesterday knocked out some people, most of the losers were too distraught to re-buy, and tonight looks like the last shot at getting an "easy win."

The spreadsheet is updated at:

Day 5 Results - What'd I say?!

I mean, I tried to warn.... I tried to warn you all that Marquette would break your heart, and you didn't listen.  Marquette drags three players out the door and takes another three to the rebuy line, including my own mother.  Way to go mom.  27 now remain in the suicide pool, with the possibility of as many as 32 if everyone eligible can rebuy.

As for the Super 7, Michigan St losing to YOUR.... LOUISVILLLLLLLLLEEEEE..... CAH-RRRRRDDDD-INALS!!!!!!!!! really screwed some people up.  Jared Black & Robby Boswell are sitting pretty, with the Louisville/Florida game essentially being an elimination game between the two.  But don't count out the Crone boys (well, except me... You can safely count me out), who are lurking w/ UNC, & several UNC/Baylor combos could jump up tomorrow.  Until then...

Week 2 Begins Tomorrow!

All, just a reminder that the tourney is starting up again tomorrow.  Please send your pick in prior to the games beginning - I will NOT reveal picks until I have received everyone's pick - at this point, people could start gaining advantages by knowing who others have picked.  So I do not have an unfair advantage, I'll be making my picks the day before on this blog and facebook/twitter as long as I am in (unless I get to the final 2 or so... then you'll just have to trust me or David will start collecting picks).  I'm taking Ohio St tomorrow.  Good luck all!

Week 1 Recap of Super 7 & Suicide Pool

Overall, week one was.... Uneventful, save Friday.  So how's everyone doing?  Still have that rebuy chambered?!?!  I know I do!

Let's start w/ the Super 7 contest.  Some moron decided not to use a 1 seed at all, and he's paying the price.  But enough about this moron.  Shannon Ware and Jared Black are sitting tied for first, and both will at least get 2 points for a Sweet 16 win as they have two teams playing each other.  Minor props going to defending champion Tom Crone for being the only player to have his 7-10, 11-12, and 13-16 still alive - minor props are immediately taken away as he could not manage to keep a 2-6 with them.  Something tells me that team is losing steam fast and soon.  Some darkhorse teams to watch out for could be Blake Hooper, who has a Wisconsin team that has looked strong and has some favorable matchups coming up, and tourney pool co-manager David Crone, who is the only person not to lose a 1-6 seed yet.

As for the suicide pool.... Things are getting a LITTLE dicey for yours truly.  I've essentially burned through the entire left half of the bracket, but with a rebuy still unused, I have a little more flexibility than about 1/3rd of the field left.  So who's sitting in the best spot?  Amazingly, I think it's our defending champion, Mitchell Speedy.  Speedy's first round picks both got bounced in the second round, leaving him having only used Indiana & Florida of the remaining 16 teams.  As one of the few players who can still use all the 1's and 2's in the tournament, it'll be interesting to see how he, and the others in his position, play the rest of the way.

Other trends to note:

- Only one person has used UNC thus far - Ben Kraft.  Something tells me that number will go up by a couple when they play Ohio on Friday.
- Despite the gaudy tiebreaker score, Larry Gillespie has managed to use four teams that made it to the Sweet 16.  Wonder how his bracket looks...
- Besides Speedy, Mike Kapfhammer is the only other competitor who has not rebought and can choose from 14 of the 16 teams - unfortunately, Michigan St is not one of those 14.

And maybe the most important number to note:

- The total pool is sitting at $1,420 - 10% of that ($142 for the non-math majors out there) is still up for grabs between Tom Crone and Ryan Patterson, who are fighting for the referral pool jackpot.  The rest will be paid out to us non-popular people.  I believe we'll be paying out Top 5 this year, so get those tiebreaker scores up!

Finally, this thing never goes by the book.  Something tells me all you out there thinking about Marquette on Thursday are going to either go home crying or be hitting the rebuy line.  And how about UNC on Friday?  That game has "nuclear" potential to this pool if Ohio somehow pulls a VCU.  Will someone actually have the cajones to step up and pick a double digit seed in the Sweet 16?  (I believe 3 of the last 6 years have seen a double digit seed in the Elite 8 - VCU, George Mason, and Davidson.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.)  Personally, I've been eyeing that UNC game for quite a while now....  Good luck as you prepare for week 2.  Maybe we'll actually have someone alive to the Final Four this year!  (I'm not counting on it.)

Day 3 Recap

Well, after a nice long dissertation yesterday, I will keep this short and sweet...

Just two people failed to select a winner on Saturday - Michael Seaton (who is OUT) and Ryan Patterson (first loss).

But, EVERYONE was sweating at one point or another. Louisville squeaked out a 3 point win after blowing a big advantage, IU advanced despite 117 turnovers as their 6'2 white guards crumbled under Shaka's CHAOS, Baylor was in a dogfight with Colorado until Heslip went all Jimmy Chitwood and made 62 three-pointers, and Marquette was pushed every step of the way by Murray State, but eventually Jae Crowder's hair was just too much for Murray to handle.

After Black Friday we had 5 people fail to re-buy, so we now stand at 42 entries, 26 of which have not had to re-buy as of right now.

Tomorrow is shaping up to be very interesting. Four of the eight games have better than 7 point favorites, so we will see if any of the Cinderellas can pull the another upset and send more people packing.

Day 3 Results aka A Very Foolish Strategy

Day 3 say no upsets, hence very little movement other than the loss of those that didn't rebuy and Murray selector Michael Seaton... but let's talk about a very foolish move.

The referral pool had two entrants.  Tom Crone already had to rebuy.  Ryan Patterson could easily outlast that and just wait for Tom to fold.  However, he took friggin K St today, and now, unless he rebuys, he's gonna give my dumb dad the referral pool despite Tom picking Duke day 2.  Unsound strategy.  As the old saying goes, A bird in hand....

Good luck to everyone tomorrow.  I expect nothing but Florida and Xavier picks tomorrow.

Day 2 Recap AKA This Isn't So Easy After All....

Well, after just two of our loyal compatriots had to re-buy after Day 1 things got MUCH more interesting during Day 2...TWENTY-ONE of you picked a loser on Day 2! If I wasn't among your ranks I would have much harsher words...

The day started pretty formfully with Cincinnati, Florida, and Florida St. moving a lot of people to Day 3 unscathed. And then all hell broke loose....

It all started with popular Final 4 pick Missouri losing to Norfolk State in one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history. Let's put this loss into perspective - Missouri was a 20 point favorite. The ONLY bigger favorite in the entire first round was Kentucky. Kentucky lost just twice all year and was playing a team that was awful and went 16-18, UK was a 25 point favorite. And, again, Missouri was favored by 20. For them to lose this game was absolutely monumental. Somewhat surprisingly, it only took down three victims as many people were trying to save Missouri for later rounds....but, the fun was just beginning.

The two major suicide pool killers:

Michigan and Duke

Seven people chose the Wolverines and another eight took Duke.

Michigan's popularity in the pool was somewhat surprising. But, the Big Ten loyalists came out in force and overlooked the lowly Bobcats from Ohio. Ohio pretty much controlled the game from start to finish much to the chagrin of the Wolverine backers...and probably to the chagrin of Ray Jackson (the fat one from the Fab Five).

Duke knocked out eight participants with their loss to Lehigh...which is French for, "The High." For the seventh time in eight years the Dukies go home before the Elite 8.

In other news, Butch Fisher became the first participant sent home after losing in consecutive days. Yes, he's already lost....even his re-buy.

The Temple v USF match-up pitted Kevin Egan vs Derek Wild. Derek and the USF Bulls showed everyone why it is not a good move to pick against the Big East as USF made three first half FGs but found a way to keep it close before blowing Temple away in the second half. Derek Wild advances with the incredibly ballsy 12 seed selection.

And, in other news some dumbass, i.e. me (David Crone), picked St. Mary's and watched them come back from a 12 point deficit only to airball a contested 25 footer with 12 seconds left while losing by one....seriously St. Mary's....that was your play call?

Please keep in mind that Re-Buys are available (unless your name is Butch Fisher, you're done dude). Congrats to the 28 players that have selected winners for two straight days....and you thought this was gonna be easy......

Suicide Pool Day 1 Recap

TWO?!?!  We lost TWO people?!?!  That's it????  How boring.  I expect at least ten of you screw ups to be forced into the rebuy line today.

Regardless, we had a 96% success rate, with only UCONN taking anyone out.  One of the two taken out by UCONN, Butch Fisher, had prepaid his rebuy - I hope he doesn't think he can keep gambling with 9 seeds.  Oh well.

Spreadsheet Leaderboard is Live!!!

Bookmark this link!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiIjWkKABgzQdFNHS1Uzb3FUS2hoeTFLeVprZTJMZkE#gid=0

Currently the Suicide Pool sits at 50 contestants, and the Super 7 sits at 27 contestants.  Overall, a great turnout!  Also, the referral pool has exactly TWO suicide pool entrants - Ryan Patterson and Tom Crone.  Unless I miscounted, no one referred enough people to the Super 7 to get into that pool.  Let me know if I messed up the referral pool counts.  Good luck everyone!!

- Phil

Let it begiiiiiinn!!!

I'm completely caught up on things as far as I know.  If you see something amiss when the leaderboard goes live at noon, let me know and I'll take care of it.  For anyone curious about numbers, the Suicide Pool is up to 30 & the Super Seven is sitting at 20.  Also, two players are entered in the referral pool, so we got a heads up match for the 10% jackpot.  I can say w/ great authority that both of these players could very well be out before the weekends, so you may want to do some last minute recruiting to get yourself in the mix.

Thanks to everyone who has entered and good luck!  Leaderboard link will be posted around the tip of the first game.

Referral Bonus!

So we've decided to sweeten the pot just a lil extra.  We are now introducing the referral bonus!  This one is very simple - get three or more friends/enemies/suckers/fake-people-you-made-up-to-get-multiple-entries* into the pool, and you'll be eligible for a side pot that is winner take all.  The side pot will be 10% of the total pool (rebuys and all).  Yeah, Ten friggin percent.  That means if the pool gets to $1500, and you're the only one who refers 3+ people, you just get $150 as our way of saying thanks, or something like that.  This seems like an awful idea, but I blame David.

This applies to both games, so get out there and do some evangelizing!

*Please don't make up fake people; I think I'm smart enough to maybe figure it out, but maybe not...

2012 Pools.... They're back!

Very few tweaks to the rules this year.  Once again, we will be doing both the Suicide Pool and the Super Seven.  Rules for both games below...

March Madness 2012 Fantasy Pick ‘em
I think people enjoyed this, so we’re bringing it back.  Last year we got $300 in the pool, and my freaking dad took it down.  Weak.  I expect better from you all.
Rules
·         Choose seven teams at the start of the tournament.  These teams will be your teams throughout the tournament.
·         You cannot pick just any seven teams.  Your teams must fall into these seven tiers..
o   Any 1 seed
o   Any 2 seed
o   Any 3-4 seed
o   Any 5-6 seed
o   Any 7-10 seed
o   Any 11-12 seed
o   Any 13-16 seed
·         You may choose a second team from a lower tier to replace a team from a higher tier.  For example, you may pick two 2 seeds, but as a result, you cannot pick a 1 seed.  To extend the example further, you may pick two 5-6 seeds, but you then have to throw out either your 1 seed, your 2 seed, or your 3-4 seed.
·         Points are awarded based on wins…
o   First/Second Round – 1 point
o   Sweet 16/Elite 8 – 2 points
o   Final Four/Championship – 3 points
·         The winner is the person whose seven teams accumulate the most points.  In the event of a tie, the tie will be broken in the following manner: Top individual team total, then second highest team total, etc.
o   Ex: You and I score 35 points in the tournament.  My best team was NCAA champion Louisville, who amassed 10 points.  Your top team was NCAA championship loser Kentucky, who amassed 7 points.  You lose, I win.
o   If this does not break the tie, pot will be split evenly between participants.
Payment
·         Entry cost: $10
·         Money must be in my grubby hands in some form before you make your pick.  The pool was big enough last year that I feel like I can big-time you all like this.
o   PayPal – Probably the easiest to track and you don’t have to track me down.  My paypal ID is pc30@evansville.edu.  In addition, when paying on PayPal, CHOOSE THAT IT IS A PERSONAL PAYMENT!  Otherwise, PayPal will take a commission.  If you do not have a PayPal account, sign up now so it can check your bank account.  Again, this is the preferred method of payment.  Not only does it guarantee I get the money, it also GETS YOU PAID FASTER IF YOU WIN!!!
o   Find my and physically hand me cash or a check.  I literally have to have the payment in my hand.  Do not call me and say “I’ll get you Sunday.”  Not happening.  Unless that Sunday is the Sunday before the tournament starts.
Results
All results will be available at tourneypools.blogspot.com
Payout
Payouts will be determined at the end based on number of entries.  Below are the projected payouts (assuming 100 entries).  We will not pay out beyond 5 spots.
1st: $600
2nd: $240
3rd: $100
4th: $36
5th: $24

March Madness 2012 Suicide Pool
The game that separates the men/women from the boys/girls.  Last year the pot got up to $1,020, and the winner, Mitchell Speedy, took home $550.
Rules
·         Choose one team each day that you think will win for that particular day.
·         If your team wins, congrats, you are alive for another day!  If not, you are out.  In addition, if you forget to pick that day, you are out.
·         Once you have a chosen a team, you cannot choose that team again for the rest of the contest.  If you use Kansas to beat Coppin St in round one, Kansas will not be an available option if they are still alive in the Elite 8.  If you ever get to a point where you cannot pick a team b/c you have used all the teams playing that day, then you are out.
·         The winner is the last person still alive.  (We did have an outright winner last year.)  In the event of a tie, the tie will be broken in the following manner…
1.       Highest combined total of all seeds selected
§  Ex: You and I get knocked out on Day 6.  Because I’m awesome, I had that 12 seed that won in round one.  My combined seed picking total is 28, and yours is 26.  I win.
2.       Highest individual seed selected, and then second highest individual seed, etc.
§  Ex. You and I get knocked out Day 6, but both of our combined seed totals are 28.  I had my 12 seed, but your highest seed you picked was a 10 seed.  I win again.
3.       Highest individual seed selected by round, and then second highest individual seed by round, etc.
§  Ex. You and I get knocked out Day 6, both of our combined seed totals are 28, and we have happened to have every seed we’ve chosen be the exact same.  However, you picked a 10 seed to win in round 1 (which they did), but I had my 10 seed to win in round 2 (which they did).  Once again you lose.  You’re really bad at this.  (If you don’t understand this rule, that’s fine.  Odds are it will not come in to play.)
4.       If this does not result in a tie being broken, the pot will be split evenly.
Payment
·         Entry cost: $20
·         Rebuy cost: $20.  You are only allowed one rebuy.  If you get knocked out Day 1 b/c you got cute and took that 13 seed, you can rebuy the next day.  Even if you get knocked out Day 8, you can rebuy if you haven’t yet (and there are still teams you can pick).  If you are planning on rebuying, you have to rebuy the next day.  No losing on Thursday and then deciding to rebuy on Saturday.
Unless that Sunday is the Sunday before the tournament starts.
o   This payment policy is also in effect for rebuys.  Get me the money or your rebuy does not count.  This is why PayPal is preferred.  You probably won’t see me every day, but you’ll likely see your computer.
Results
All results will be available at tourneypools.blogspot.com
Payout
Payouts will be determined at the end based on number of entries.  Below are the projected payouts (assuming 100 entries).  We will not pay out beyond 5 spots.
